On 1st September we received the assays for the second set of rocks (ie rocks #151 to #307). There were some interesting findings and we may be onto something very important.
Another type of rock. In the first set of rocks, we had basically three different types of rocks, but in this second set of rocks, a fourth type of rock was found. This rock-type is a dark ultramafic, but not a serpentine. It has high levels of titanium, iron, calcium, sulfur, phophorus and vanadium. Plus it has anomalously high levels of copper, scandium, manganese and zinc, as well as elevated levels of arsenic, gold and platinum.
Further work is needed and more specimens will be collected in order to better understand the size of these apparently large deposits. We note that the vanadium is at a grade which is only slightly lower than the grade of vanadium that is mined overseas. There are no vanadium mines operating in Australia, but it is a very important metal for making steel rust-resistant and strong. Plus it is being used in new types of batteries for efficiently storing grid electricity from windmills and solar plants. These "flow" batteries are very large and they can be re-charged "infinitely" many times without deterioration. So, it is a very important metal for the future of renewable energy. Vanadium is needed to enable Australia (and other countries) to replace coal-fired power stations with battery storage on a very large scale.
